I've seen cats curl their tongues both ways. Forward if their licking from a faucet or other kind of dripping water, or backwards if licking out of a dish. Seems either way they depend more on the tongue barbs to hold the moisture. I tried to find a cool slow-mo cat drinking... this is the best I could find.

No joke... and doesn't it look like the one's leaving the big mess by the bowl would be the cats? Yet.. it was always the dogs. Go figure.
