euro 2008-early doors

Nothing quite beats that Monday morning feeling of pure contentment after a weekend filled with great sporting action and results.

England was a nation bang on form on Saturday, with both teams - football and rugby - recording respective wins to complete a fantastically successful day of sport.
So, having watched both matches, and fiercely celebrated afterwards, why was Early Doors feeling a little queasy when faced with a bowl of Corn Flakes at breakfast? The label clearly states that the milk does not turn until Thursday.
In fact, the sickly feeling seems to stem from the knowledge that there are two even bigger games to be played this week. And Early Doors, being a bit of a pessimist, is fearing the worst.
While the rugby team proved many wrong as they excelled themselves in beating the French, Steve McClaren's football team were expected to beat Estonia, and comfortably so. They did not disappoint, but the real test now lies on a plastic pitch in Moscow.
Over there, anything can happen. Just ask Gary O'Connor. It seems as though the greater the prize, the greater the potential pit-fall. With qualification well in touching distance, failure now would be unacceptable.
The same goes for the rugby team - they have gone this far and defeat against South Africa on Sunday would be devastating, especially for the rather fragile ED.
This is surely going to be one of the longest weeks in ED's short time on this planet. We just hope we'll be waking up next Sunday feeling sickly once again, only this time with a celebratory hangover.

It wasn't all sweetness and light on Saturday though, with boos ringing out for Frank Lampard once again as he took to the pitch at Wembley. It seems some England fans have it in for poor old Frank at the moment, and whatever he does will not be good enough.
But reaction to the boo-boys has been positive and not since Eva Herzigova's mesmerising Wonderbra campaign in the 1990's has such support been displayed in public.
It seems all and sundry have leapt to the poor old Frank's defence with current and former England managers along with a handful of players all coming out fighting his corner.
Terry Venables, Steve McClaren, Joe Cole, to name but a few, have all backed the Chelsea man, who could now have the chance to re-pay their faith in him as it looks likely that he will play in Russia on Wednesday.

Bonfire Night may not be for another few weeks yet, but residents of north London could be witnessing an early fireworks display lighting up the skies above the Emirates this week, after serial nonsense-talker Jens Lehmann claimed he expects his place back for next weekend's game against Bolton.
Short of putting himself into a very deep, dark hole with his eyes shut and a pillow over his head over the last month or so, it would have been rather difficult for Jens not to have heard just how well Arsenal have done recently.
The Germany keeper has not played since August 19 - a 1-1 draw against Blackburn and the last time Arsenal failed to win a match in any competition - and his absence has coincided with some of the most exhilarating football seen for years.
But 'stand-in' Manuel Almunia's seven (that's right, count 'em) clean sheets since Lehmann retired to his hole are clearly of no consequence to the man who is the proud owner of what is surely the biggest ego in the Premier League.
Expect Lehmann to fizz louder than a Jumpin' Jack when he is told his name does not appear on Saturday's team-sheet - it'll be worth the entrance money alone.
