The Siege (Ongoing Series)

It was a warm and foggy morning in Davenport, as small fishing village just off the southern tip of the Sword Coast. Daelen Phae, the town mayor, had awakened from a terrible dream, sweating profusely. His thoughts dwelled on the well being of the villagers, with all the recent bandit attacks, no one was safe it seemed. He had been working for days trying to find a solution to the problem, but to no avail. He believed his only option would be to send word to the Lords Alliance, requesting a call to arms. A dire request for assistance.

His only option was to send it with the town ranger, Teran Lightfoot. He was reputed for his fleetness and stealth. Often completing tasks so quickly and quietly that he was rarely seen. Daelen planned to meet with Teran at the meeting in the town hall. He sat at his desk, scribing intensely, seemingly lost in his objectives, when he heard a thunderous knock on his door. "Mayor!!!" The voice screamed as if terrified. At the sound of the man's voice Daelen jumped to his feet, startled. "Come on in and tell me what is wrong, Corvin." The mayor said, hoping the man would calm down.

Corvin Plashtkin, the town crier, came rushing in. "Bandits on the skirts! The are besieging Lady Mediva and her family sir!" The terror of the attack was evident about the mans flushed complexion. "What?! Bandits in town?" Daelen's expression turned to slightly match that of Corvin's. "We must gather a few guards and head that way. This siege must come to an end, NOW." The mayor dressed in his robes and garb, grabbed his weapon belt, and rushed out the door.

The fires could be seen from the town square. The mayors home was just outside of it. He believed that to effectively care for his villagers, he must reside as close to them all as possible. "Corvin! Come on we have no time to waste!" He yelled at the frightened man as he began to rush toward the town hall. He caught one of the guards about to walking out the door. He glared at the guard as he spoke. "Grab a few others and follow me. Quickly!" The gaurd yelled for assistance and was met with three additional guards wielding swords and shields and they all headed toward the Mediva estate.

Daelen pulled his staff from his belt as he and the guards made their way inside the burning house. The heat from the fire could be felt for atleast an eighth mile from outside the house, inside it was worse. "You two check the bottom floor for insurgents and you two follow me upstairs! Offer aid to any survivors as you encounter them." Daelen, Corvin, and one of the guards rushed upstairs. The upper portion of the house was a single room that looked like a banquet area for the Mediva family. The eldest of the family, Father Merul, was laying slain on the north wall. The attackers were still hovering over his body as Daelen and company reached the top of the stairs.

Corvin grabbed a small crossbow from his back and took a shot at the first bandit he seen. He was shaking so badly that he almost missed, knicking the guy in his arm. Fortunately, the bandit dropped his sword as the arrow pierced his bicep. Daelen and the guard rushed the wounded bandit and before the mayor could even take a swing, the guard had stabbed the bandit in the chest, just below the heart. "Nice shot!" Corvin screamed as he loaded another bolt into his crossbow and cocked it back. Daelen drew back and cracked one of the bandits so hard it knocked him off his feet. Moments later, Corvin fired at the remaining insurgent, striking him in the throat. A fatal blow, Corvin thought, as he laughed slightly. He was enjoying his small role in the battle. The guard turned swiftly and sliced at the last bandit, only to have his blade blocked by Daelen's staff. "This one is unconscious. We are defenders, not murderers." He gave the guard a sharp glare as he lifted that bandit to his feet, waking him with a few slaps to the face.

"Why did you attack this place?!" He said. The guard suddenly turned around in time to see Corvin impaled on a small spearhead. "Corvin!!!" Daelen turned as the guard yelled. As soon as the bandit came in view, he fell to his knees, mortally wounded, but his attacker remained unseen. "What the?!" The guard yelled, raising his blade. "Relax." Daelen said calmly, turning back to the bandit he still had a firm grip on. "Teran, you can show yourself now. This area is clear. Check on Corvin and see how bad the wound is while we interrogate this one." Teran suddenly appeared as if out of nowhere. "Yes sir." The ranger kneeled down over Corvin. "The wound is bad but not fatal sir, I should be able to heal him." Teran began to mutter something and a bright white light engulfed Corvin. "Ahhhh!" Corvin screamed as he regained consciousness.

"I won't ask you again! Why did you attack this place!" His words were followed by a swift slap to the face. "I'll tell you nothing, fool!" The bandit said, a glare of hatred vaguely apparent in his eyes. "You all deserve death for your ignorance. The guildmaster will ensure it!" As his words faded he pulled a dagger from his pouch, but before he could lunge it in his chest, Daelen grabbed it from him. He then cast a hold spell and turned him over to the guard. "Take him to the jail and lock him up. He will be publicly executed at high noon." His gaze turned to Teran. "Do any of the family still live, my friend?" Teran frowned at the mayor's words. "I'm sorry sir, the entire family was taken. Most of them were executed, save for the eldest daughter, Nadine. She was carried off." As the guard carried the bandit down the stairs Daelen looked at Teran.

"I have a task of dire importance for you, I need you to meet me at the town hall before the execution will commence. It is imperitive that we rally the villagers together if we are to stop this threat." They both headed downstairs and out the doors, as if thinking the same thought. The fog covering the village had subsided and morning had fully come. "One hour from now Teran. Thats when we'll call the meeting." Daelen smiled as the words escaped his lips. "I'll be there sir." Teran said, quite formally. "Teran, we've known each other for years, so cut the formalities." They both laughed and went their separate ways.

The second issue is already in the works...but my creativity is suffering a bit so it may take some time and I doubt it will even remotely rival the intro. That was genius!
