Windows LIVE Products

Just thought I would make a post about Windows Live Products!

About a year ago Microsoft decided to start re-naming some products to "Windows Live"

The new version of MSN is now called Windows Live Messenger, and has a few new features in it as well as some features that will be coming soon.

Other Live Products that have been released are:
  • Windows Live OneCare - Microsoft's AntiVirus, Firewall etc program (also has file backup facility)
  • Windows Live Favorites - Do you go away sometimes and use another PC and wish you have access to your Favorites? Well this online-tool stores your favorites so you can travel with your favories
  • Windows Live Custom Domains - This feature allows you to use your own domain name on the Microsoft Mail Services (i think that just means you can use your own email address through the Hotmail / Windows Live Mail software)
There are also a number of other features under testing:
(All have Windows Live before the name)
  • Windows Live Mail (to replace Hotmail) - This has sbeen around for a while, this is a more up-to-date Hotmail, and funaly enough Yahoo are changing their system, and AOL have changed their web-based system and they all look the same!!!
  • Windows Live Mail Desktop - Displays any new emails you recived including mail from Gmail and AOL as well as newsgroup posts and RSS!!
  • Search - The new msn search!
  • Toolbar - just like the google toolbar, allows you to search, and has popup blocker in it.
  • QnA - a Question and Answer site with anyone being able to contribute i think!
  • Microsoft Office Live - not quite sure but it says it gives you a Website email and more!
  • Shopping - Look for products you want and read reviews.
  • Product Search - Focuses on Consumer Products, giving you a entire world of shopping online
  • Expo - Exchange goods, ideas or information
  • Local - More for the U.S. giving maps, directions, bird's eyes views, satalite pics (sounds like Google Earth to me lol )
  • Safty Center - Protect your computer and keep it tip-top shape
  • Accademic - Research Journals for research
  • Search - Mobile - Live Search for mobiles
Excuse the way its worded thats how microsoft worded it :P

Well, I am never one to recommend or claim MS is bad with some stuff!!

I been using Windows Live OneCare since it went beta, works great, does everything it is advertised to do. I do note however, that it does not play well with some other firewall, and anti-virus programs. It also does not find all the junk that some of the other programs find after you been on the net going thru sites for a while.

The Backup function does very well, if you have a drive to put the backup on, "personally I have an external HD to use", and I have it automated to do a backup on a scheduled basis, so I do not forget to backup!! (with other software I had you had to remember to run it, or the schedule part gave no reminders, or warnings. You can search for files to restore if you need to get some info back on your main drive. I would think that the backup to CD might be a little tougher to do.

It also comes with Windows Defender, a separate program to run some other protection, and it checks for missing updates, and downloads according to how you set it to operate. I personally look at anything it downloads before I let it install.

I would recommend it to anyone who needs basic protection.
