I learned a very hard lesson
Way back oh so many years
To show only a smiling face
And forever hiding my tears

Everyone said I was calm and collected
But I never would let them see
The tears my heart kept hidden
Or the pain deep inside of me

Through my years I kept on smiling
The most cheerful one on a crowd
Only when alone and secluded
Did I let myself cry out loud

I held a tight rein on emotions
Not letting anyone get near
For to care would bring only sorrow
And heartache was my biggest fear

Then one day somebody looked deeper
And saw through my strongly built wall
With sweet words and gentle encouragement
My barrier began to crumble and fall

Now I can finally share my feelings
For that someone has helped me be proud
To let others see me cry out loud
