Video Computer

I am looking at building a new computer solely for video editing. Unfortunately I do not have the $3,000 to get the computer with a Pentium Quad and 8 gigs of RAM. Wonder if a thought on an Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, 1 Gig of RAM, and GeForce 7600 video card would be a step in the right direction. Please input if you feel that I need to step something up OR down grade. I don’t want it to be too slow or way overkill for what I want to do.

Thanks,
Erik H.

Norse,

It would be a good idea to spend a bit more on RAM. I would get atleast 2 gigs if not 4.

I could not agree more!
I would make sure that I had the best video card I could afford, and a monitor system that works well with it. Obviously, I personally would not attempt to say which operating system would be best. I love windows, but the various flavors of windows in the Vista versions have me confused as to my next operating system, which will be going on a Dual core AMD system.

I will be running XP as my softwere manufacture says it will not work on Vista. As far as the video card, I thought that the more ram on the card was for 3D graphics. Am I mistaking? I will be running S-Video out to a plasma screen TV and will be using an old monitor. This will alow the movie to be on the TV while the editing controals remain on the monitor. Is there something I should be looking for to make sure this will all work togeather? 2 Gigs instead of one. Sounds good to me, I will be sure to upgrade that. The motherboard I am getting will support up to 8 Gigs. I picked this one so I can upgrade down the road.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Erik H.

Erik,

The order of importance that I would place on the items is as follows:

Processor
RAM
Video Card

I do a bit of video editing on my PC and its an old 2.6/1.5gb ram with a 125mb Nvidia. It will "do" video editing, but it can be a pain at times waiting on the computer to process the changes.

I'm running a 24 inch widescreen dell flat panel LCD monitor and I haven't noticed a performance difference on the computer from it and an old 17 inch CRT.

I think the setup you describe will work well.

Let me make a few suggestions...

Your processor doesn't necessarily need to be too high end for it, so long as you keep your system free of low end resource hogs, like messenger clients and such say a

2.4 ghz or better p4 or athlon

Your best bet would be a pro level OS such as Win2k or better yet, almost ANY version of Linux.

Like jon (compu) said, 2 gigs of ram or better.

And I also have a specific video card in mind, as it has as yet out performed all the cards I've tested and thet is the

Nvidia Geforce FX 5500 OC

Its a 256 meg PCI card. Of course ATI makes a comparable AGP 8x card with a few extra GPU features.

Best of luck to you.
