If your internet service provider uses proprietary software to connect to the internet, or you're using a usb modem, you'll need compatible software / drivers to connect it.

Oh now I see the problem, even with parralells running, you can't have two operating systems using the same input. E.G. If your LAC (Local Area Connection) in windows is using that ethernet adapter, linux will register it as busy. This is the same problem I had running VMWare. I had to keep disabling my nic card in one or the other to run the update utility. Try disabling your network adapter in windows before attempting to connect it with Linux.

You'll also need compatible usb drivers for a linux OS. Usually you can check the Ubuntu community to find links to available package files, usually debs, for the drivers you need. If not, send me a pm and I'll link you to a couple sites that I've found over the years.
