bmooney,

Did you install all of the drivers for the laptop when you loaded XP on it? Your network card might not be 'activated' without the correct drivers?

Did your cable modem come with an installation CD? If not, you might have to call your ISP and tell them you would like to setup your internet on a laptop.

Now, depending on how old the laptop is - you might want to look into getting a wireless router and network card for your pc/laptop. This would enable you to use the laptop almost anywhere in the home. You can do some basic "google" searching for tips/hints on wireless networking.

an easier way is if you already have net set up then just go out and get a wireless router..(if the laptop has wireless connection) if not then you can still purchase a router and run both comps through the router wired instead of wirless

But you will still need the software that the ISP provides in order for it to work.

Usually, if you have one computer set up to ISP, by using either the NIC, or router all the others will work. Especially if you just connect the others thru a router that is directly connected to the computer that is connected to the ISP.

I know I had 5 computers on my home system, and all worked either wirelessly or direct wired, as long as one had been setup thru the connection, originally set up with the ISP.

They did not care how many I had connected either.
