Clearing Temp Files (TIPS)

Well here is some steps to clear some temp files that u can see or cant see

First of all you need to goto Tools -> Folder options -> Click the View Tab. Click the Show Hidden Files and folders. Then untick Hide Protected Operating system Files (Recomended) box. You will get a warning from windows about showing system files. CLick yes Then Click apply then ok.

Please becarefull what files u delete. If u delete some system files from other folders you can mess up windows so please be careful. You can do this at your own risk, but the folders below are safe to delete the contents of BUT NOT THE ACTUAL FOLDER.

I also recomend closing all applications before doing this. Cause applications use temporarty files. Also Some files say they cant be deleted in these folders below because they are possibly in use.

Ok these folders are safe to delete files in these folders but DO NO DELETE THE MAIN FOLDER

C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 (a little folder thats hidden) (DONT DELETE the content.ie5 folder)

Now moving to the Windows Dir
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
C:\WINDOWS\Temp

You may delete the files in C:\WINDOWS THAT COME BFORE the addins Folder. They normally are blue sorta font and they have $ infront of the folders. I RECOMMEND ONLY EXPERIENCED Xp users to delete these folders that have the $ as a file name, as they are windows updates back up folders if u want to unistall an update.

Then your done manually deleting temp/unuesed files.

I will Also post screenshots soon if your unsure how it is done

Regards

Johnny/Morph3us

I WILL NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILTY IN ANY DAMAGES TO YOUR SYSTEM. THIS IS A GUIDE ONLY. I do these steps all the time.

For the less technical minded people! There is another way! In IE7, click on tools, then "Delete Browsing History". You will see a selection of items you can delete one at a time, or the final option "Delete All". It will clear out everything, including saved PW files if you use the last option. I suggest using the "Delete Temp files, Delete Cookies, and Delete History Files", so that any PW files you have saved stay in place. Also you save any form fill information that you have saved in your Explorer.

If you want to remove some unneeded, "other files" in XP, - Click on "Start", then "Run", in the window that pops up type "Prefetch", hit enter, then when the window opens, Click "edit", then "select all" after that click "File", then click the "Delete" button. This file will rebuild as you use the system and browse. If you have never done this before, the # of files will be quite large, but nothing that you really need to save.
