Bad day

so for those of you who don't know i'm a substitute band teacher. Just got my first long term subbing gig(i get to sub for a teacher on materniy leave for the rest of the year.) So i was pretty exited friday and let the kids have a free day that hour so i could get to know them better (i started friday after paper work was filled out) Then today i had to get them reader for a band festival thing so i tried to actually teach. Two idiots in the percussian section started cussing like mad. I srugged it off, there teens, if you pick a fight over every swear word you'll not have time to teach. Then they made spit wads and threw them at me and the flutist in the front row. No big deal, just had them in the front row all hour. Then they picked out a kid who, let's be honest, isn't the strongest guy in the world, a nerd of sorts. I can't stand that. I used to be like that guy and nothing would drive me more nuts then when a teacher saw it and did nothing to stop it. So i sent the kids to a princibles office. Now anouther guy handed one the kids a five. they had bet on how long it would take them to get out of class. This is not good. Not only did i let my short temper get the best of me but the kids in that class have lost respect for me. I love to teach, and i love music, band is the best thing for me to do, i love it and am good at. I just can't help but take it as a bad sign that the one time i have a long term job i lose control in the first real day. Tell me, should i have handled it different, honestly. what did i do wrong?
