"America at it's finest"
Guys i spent weeks and weeks on this article...i one day might want 2 become a sports writer so please tell me if its good...so heres my first piece Enjoy! The grammer should be good i checked 10 times at least
As most of you know, I’m very passionate when it comes to sports and this issue really caught me by surprise.
Allow me to introduce you to a nine-year-old boy by the name of Jericho Scott. Jericho isn’t your average youth baseball player; he’s the best! Jericho is a right-handed pitcher who can reach up to 40 mph on the gun. Where’s the issue? It turns out that the New Haven Youth Baseball League has banned Jericho from playing baseball. He is so good that they will no longer allow him to play.
Where I come from, it should be a positive thing to be the best at something. This is another situation of America rewarding mediocrity and to me it’s just wrong. I’d like to think there is another reason as to why this has happened. Is it not safe to throw at that speed in youth baseball, is his dad one of those “little league parents”, or is he on roids? I would like to hear something from the New Haven league other than that he’s just to good. As a matter of fact his coach Wilfred Vidro addressed the safety issue. Vidro says, "He's never hurt any one," Vidro said. "He's on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?" As a matter of fact, "Jericho had not beaned any batters in the co-ed league of 8- to 10-year-olds."
If I were a parent in that league, I would have already taught my son it’s ok if you don’t win every game. It’s not about w’s at that level; it’s about giving it your all. If you go up there and strike out three times it's not big deal. As long as you gave it everything you had then great; we are still going out for pizza afterwards.
I wouldn’t mind if the league put him on a pitch count or an inning quota. I just think it’s wrong to crucify a nine year old for doing what he loves to do. Not only did the league ban Jericho from playing, but also they disbanded his team. I find that almost more appalling then the fact they suspended him. Why penalize everyone else on the team for your bad decision.
The worst part is that disbanding the team not only hurts the other kids it hurts Jericho. He said in an interview with the Associated Press that “"I feel sad, I feel like it's all my fault nobody could play."
This is the wrong message to send to the youth in this country. Next thing you know, the PGA Tour will tell Tiger he can’t play because it isn’t fair to the rest of the players. I know, they are grown men and know better, but that’s a parents’ job to help their kids understand life and the “fastballs” they will be thrown their way the rest of their lives.
