There are nicks (indents, ... those things) on the top surface of the base, the ropes fit into them and you can slide out the rope when finished?
(same as male, points will be awarded to a member if ever I have a right answer  )
No sorry Kay Spanky is on the right track and someone else at the start gave a clue out as well
